Michael A. Bates, 56, of Pickerington died at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 07, 2018 at the Kobacker House, Columbus, after a 3 year illness.
He was born on February 11, 1962 in Zanesville, Ohio the son of Charles and Mitsue Sugiyama Bates Jr.
Michael was Catholic by faith. He was a teacher at South-Western City School in Grove City. He loved reptiles and had many friends worldwide that shared his passion. He enjoyed fishing, eating, watching the Ohio State Buckeyes and traveling. Michael was a Junior High boys and girls basketball coach when he was a teacher in Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife Rebecca "Becky" Bates; two sons, Michael Bates of Belpre and Mark Bates of Pickerington; two sisters, Patty Bates of Hopewell, and Tina (Steve) Stanton of Nashport; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews, including family members in Japan.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Zanesville Memorial Park led by Celebrant Jeff Hardwick.
