OBIT FOR: THOMAS SHERWOOD "SHERRY" DINAN, 85
Thomas Sherwood "Sherry" Dinan, 85 of Zanesville died at 2:15 AM Sunday, October 2, 2022 at the Genesis Morrison House Hospice.
He was born June 24, 1937 in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of Thomas R. Dinan and Hilda V. Grandstaff Dinan.
Sherry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a life-time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1959, he was named the Times Recorder Sports Editor in 1960, a post that he held for 29 years. He continued as a sports writer and news editor up until his retirement in 2002. In 1997, he was inducted into the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Hall of Fame, an honor that he didn’t even know existed at the time. In 2003, he was honored with an induction into the Zanesville District Golf Association Hall of Fame for his continuous support of local golf and certainly not for his golf prowess. In 2004, he was inducted into the Muskingum Valley Old Timers Association Hall of Fame for his many years of coaching and reporting on local youth baseball. Rosecrans High School inducted Sherry into their Hall of Fame in 2011 for promoting Bishop athletes on the local and state levels leading to numerous athletes making top honors in Ohio.
He had a varied and interesting career, covering the Rose Bowl, the World Series, NCAA Basketball Tournaments, hundreds of OSU home football games, professional golf events as well as 27 years of Heisman Trophy voting. However, throughout his 50+ year career, he was most proud of covering the local kids.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Fattlar Dinan, whom he married Nov 5, 1960; their sons, Kevin (Mary) Dinan, Steve (Gail) Dinan, Jeff (Melissa) Dinan, Dan (Julie) Dinan and Brent (Stephanie) Dinan; and their grandchildren, Ashley, Bradley, Emily, Greg, Grant, Annamarie, Jack, Luke, Nicole, Colleen, Logan and Evan; a brother, John (Kathleen) Dinan; a sister, Christine (Bill) Merry; two sisters-in-law, Estelle Dinan and Brenda Dinan, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Sherry was preceded in death by his brothers, Mike Dinan, Pete Dinan, Dave Dinan, a sister, Cathy Mallett, and a special aunt, Catherine “Sis” Dinan.
Visitation to be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at the Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home and one hour prior to service at the church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Ryan Schmit as celebrant. Burial will conclude at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
